Second Transnational Project Meeting of the DJ Project was held in University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia on 28-29 October 2024. The meeting aimed to develop academic and digital content that will support the responsible and conscious news production of the media in times of disasters. The event was attended by academics, media organisations and local government representatives from Turkey, Spain, Slovenia and Ukraine. On the first day of the meeting hosted by the Faculty of Humanities of University of Primorska in a hybrid format, Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Gölcü and his team from Selçuk University presented the general situation of the project and the disaster journalism curriculum. The first results of the survey conducted in June were also shared at the meeting.

 

 

Project Outputs will be Enriched with International Contributions 

 

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv provided information on the process of preparing disaster journalism guidebooks. Participants from the University of Vigo explained the process of transferring these books to digital platforms. From Turkey, the Presidency of Communication and RTÜK contributed to the project as observer organizations and shared their evaluations.

 

Academic Integration of Disaster Reporting Education

 

On the second day of the meeting, partner organisations presented their views and contributions to the project process under WP5. Afterwards, the representatives of the University of Primorska explained how they have been experimentally dealing with the topic of disaster journalism within the scope of the Media Anthropology course. They expressed their beliefs that the students will contribute with their individual seminar studies based on critical literature reviews and media analyses. Common goals for the future were stated

At the end of the meeting, the joint commitment to develop digital materials, curricula and guidebooks to be used in the field of disaster reporting was emphasized. These efforts aim to better equip both communication students and journalists working in the field against disasters. The participants were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Michaël Mrissa, Vice Rector of the University of Primorska. Mrissa expressed the importance the university attaches to international collaborations and its support for the project. The two-day event ended with fruitful future planning.
