The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Primorska hosted the first awareness-raising event of the Erasmus+ project “Disaster Journalism: Preventing the News from Turning into a Disaster” on 20 November 2025. Coordinated by Selçuk University (Türkiye), the project aims to promote responsible and accurate reporting during crises and emergencies.
The event highlighted the essential role humanitarian organisations play in disaster response. Mojca Cenčič from the Red Cross of Slovenia shared insights into the organisation’s key activities, emergency response procedures, and long-term recovery efforts, as well as the practical challenges encountered in the field.
In the opening session, Karmen Medica and Lia Lola V. Kotnik from the Department of Media Studies (UP FHŠ) introduced the project and outlined the multi-level institutional actors involved in disaster management at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
The project team announced that the series of awareness events will continue in the coming months, aiming to strengthen collaboration between academic communities and practitioners working in crisis communication and disaster response.
